Every time you go into an electronics store now there seems to be a multitude of speaker wire promising better quality at an extremely high price. The same could be said of HDMI and other component cables as well but do they actually offer you better quality? The answer is no and most don’t understand the rationale behind it.
The quality of your speaker wire is as important as the link and the connections used to connect it from speaker to receiver. Gold plated connectors though can be bought for as little as 75 cents a pack and are really easy to attach. This may cause a little more work but really it’s not as hard as it sounds. This still doesn’t answer the question about the speaker wire it’s self.
When you purchase speaker wire what you are actually paying for are advertisements from other companies. In order to make their product sound out many companies will spend millions of dollars getting their cables certified and the reality is there is no difference between high end and low end speaker wire. I know this because of the quality testing I have done with both.
I worked in the home theater installation business for the better part of a decade. I saw customers being talked in to purchase that were almost 8 times the cost of the systems themselves. I began to wonder if there was really a difference in speaker wire brands so I did this test.
I took the shielding off the speaker wire and I looked at the interior. It was the same copper wire that was inside the more expensive brand so I thought it must be in the shielding. After I hooked the different types of speaker wire back into the receiver I exposed it to magnetic interference. I was shocked to find out that the shielding on the low end wire was actually better than that of the high end speaker wire. Take this into mind when buying new speaker wire because all you will be doing by buying high end speaker wire is giving the store more profit.
